“What colour bridesmaid dresses should I buy?”

Over the past few months, I have had a number of my brides ask advice on choosing the colour of their bridesmaid dresses. What colours should I go for? What colours compliment skin tones, Are there any colours to avoid? What colours will suit my bridesmaids?

Colour plays a big role in making sure the whole look comes together and highlights the bride, but how do you pick the perfect colour for your bridesmaid dresses? Here are some useful tips!

1. Time of year

The season of your wedding day is a great place to start as this will help decide on many factors. It will help you to determine the style along with the flowers. What flowers are in season as these flowers are most likely to be in the bouquets? I think of reds, golds, emerald greens and royal blues in the Winter. Pastel palettes look fantastic in the Spring as do yellows. The bright colours of pinks and purples in the sunshine of the Summer can look fantastic. The Autumn is a time for auburns, oranges, reds and dark greens. You may have a favourite flower that will help guide you in the colours available.

2. Location

Consider your wedding venue when choosing any wedding attire for your special day. If you are having a beach theme wedding you will more than likely go for pale blues, soft yellows or coral, If you are having a wedding in the country you may feel shades of nudes and greens to suit your venue.

3. Wedding theme

The theme you choose for your wedding can also help in choosing your bridesmaid dresses. For example, if you are having a rustic/vintage wedding, softer, more muted colours would look fab, whereas if you are having a more modern wedding, black and white would give you the classic look. Your colours should reflect the theme of the wedding and compliment your wedding dress, whether it’s diamond white, eggshell, or blush.

4. The right shade

I always advise my brides to choose a colour that’s in keeping with the theme of her wedding. If there is a colour running through the flowers, invites and decorations it looks lovely to have the bridesmaid dresses in the same colour or a shade of this colour. If your flowers are purple you may want to go for a shade of purple like lilac. Shades can also work if you are choosing multiple colours.

5. Skin tones

The trick is to know which colours flatter and which to avoid, which isn’t always easy. To start off, envisage colours as warm or cool. The warm colours will have an underlying tone of yellow. Think of sunny days in summer and autumn and the shades of orange, brown, khaki green, deep reds, caramel and gold. Your personal colouring will be either warm or cool. You’re more likely to suit warm coloured tones if you have brown, hazel, pale green or pale blue eyes with chestnut, dark blonde, dark brown or red hair.

I hope this helps to give you some ideas of where to start when choosing the colours for your bridesmaid dresses. Want to know a little more? Why not head to the blog and take a read of my 7 ways to choose bridesmaids dresses that compliment the bride!
