What brides don’t know, want to know and need to know about wedding dress shopping in Cornwall!

Wedding dress shopping can be a mixture of emotions. What do I want? What will fit? What will look right? Lots of brides have had different experiences with family or friends and now it’s your turn! So, here's the truth about wedding dress shopping, what happens at your appointment and 14 things to expect.

1. It might be hard work

You might not love every second of it. Trekking from shop to shop may get tiring, and you might find it frustrating not finding the one right away – but it’s worth it in the end!

2. You might not cry

We’ve all seen it in the movies where everyone wells up in sync as the bride walks out of the fitting room. Despite all of us thinking (and hoping) this might happen, it also may not and that’s fine. Each bride’s reaction is different, unique to them and beautiful in its own right. Plus you’ll also be doing your entourage a favour by saving their mascara!!

3. Being spoilt for choice is a real thing

You may have had that Pinterest board brewing for a while and a stack of bridal magazines to flick through but if you look at too much you’ll only confuse yourself.

4. Size doesn’t matter

Bridal sizes are different to normal sizes. It’s just a thing. Don’t read into it too much. While you might be a certain size at your favourite highstreet clothing store, wedding dresses in Cornwall are sized to alter, not necessarily sized like jeans.

5. There will be fine print

Read it! If you fall for a dress and put down a deposit, make sure you read the fine print, paying particular attention to the information about exchanges, refunds and whether the shop will keep the dress in-store for you.

6. Be prepare to be naked!!

You might want to try on a dress that doesn’t need a bra with it – and the shop assistant may come in to help you into it. I’m forever seeing odd socks and mismatched sets of bras and pants so don’t stress too much when in the changing room. We’ve seen it all before!

7. You might fall for the first dress you try on

And that’s totally fine. It’s also fine to try on a few more, just to be sure. You can always go back to the first dress at the end if you’re still feeling the love.

8. You’ll have to learn things

What is a bustle? What kind of bustle do you want? How will the dress be done up and how will you get out of it? It’s a learning curve and we are there to help you throughout the process.

9. Know your budget

Yes, that super expensive designer’s dresses are so pretty and will make anyone look like a fabulous princess but there’s no point even considering them if it’s outside of your price range. As much as boutiques love to help you find ‘the one’, it's not etiquette to just try them on just for fun!

10. Reduce your entourage

Your whole bridal squad might want to come with you when you go dress shopping, but it’s important to know that less is more. You'll feel outnumbered by all the voices and can become so overwhelmed when you have that many girls in a room. If you take lots of people with you you’re going to get a lot of opinions and that’s not what you need. Take your mum and your Maid of Honour – that’s all you need.

11. Each bride's journey to finding her dress is unique.

You might assume that because your best friend bought the first dress she tried on that you will too. But you might end up needing to try on more dresses or going to more appointments, and that shouldn't dishearten you.

12. Know your own mind and follow your heart.

I have seen it so many times when a bride absolutely loves their dress but their entourage has mixed opinions! As already mentioned it’s important to bring the people that have your best interest in mind, but if you fall in love with a dress go for it! Remember, you are the one wearing it and it’s your day!

13. It’s time to face the mirror

Sometimes we can all be our own worst enemies when it comes to our reflections and throughout your appointment (much like your big day), all eyes will be on you! We will want to work with you to discover the true beauty of your own body and feel completely confident in the dress you choose.

14. You’ll have a fixed time

As much as bridal boutiques will give you their undivided attention throughout the appointment, it’s highly likely that you won’t be their only bride of the day. You may fancy having an all-day affair however appointments generally will be run on a  1.5/2 hour time allocation.

So there you have it! The truth about wedding dress shopping in Cornwall! What brides don’t know, want to know and need to know about wedding dress shopping in Cornwall!
