Cornwall Bridal Boutique: Finding the best wedding dress for you

Choosing a style that makes you look and feel amazing!

Wedding dress shopping in Cornwall can become overwhelming, particularly with many of the brides who come into my boutique being unsure of what wedding dress shape and style would suit them. They often have an idea (and a Pinterest board) of what they would like but some have no idea where to start!

More than often, I find brides leave with a dress shape or style completely different to what they originally had in mind. I always encourage my brides to come to their appointments with an open mind. Until you try on various styles and shapes, it’s hard to know what you feel comfortable in and what suits you perfectly.

All bodies are beautiful so work with your shape, rather than against it, to find a wedding gown that will flatter your figure and have you radiating with total confidence. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t have parts of our bodies that we are not so happy with, but instead of hiding the bits you dislike, try to accentuate the bits you love!

Below, I’ve listed several different body types to help you with your search. Above all, I remind all my brides to remember that it’s how you FEEL in the dress that will help you find your best overall fit! The best place to start is with YOU!

Petite

5ft and under with a small frame.

Dress dos: Most silhouettes and styles will flatter your frame, so have fun with different styles and try on dresses to surprise yourself! You may want to create an illusion of height so choose flowing chiffon and silk if so.

Designers to try from our shop: Millie May, Venus, White Rose and House of St Patrick La Sposa.

Tall

Over 5ft8.

Dress dos: Again, most silhouettes and styles will flatter your taller frame so try on several different styles from A-line to full princess style gowns. Whilst you’re swishing in your dress, add a long cathedral veil which works beautifully on a tall bride.

Designers to try from our shop: Millie May, Millie Grace, Venus, White Rose and House of St Patrick La Sposa.

Hourglass

A wide bust, a narrow waist, and wide hips.

Dress dos: During your appointment, you may wish to try a mermaid- or trumpet-style gown, this style of skirt can be a knockout with your gorgeous curves. Another good choice may be a high-waisted A-line dress with a low neckline which also really complements those curves.

Busty

You've got a full bust.

Dress dos: You can either choose to accentuate or minimise those assets, depending on how confident you feel. Choose to accentuate using corset style dress or deep V neck. Or minimise by balancing your top design with a full skirt.

Pear-Shaped

Hips are wider than shoulders with a smaller waist.

Dress dos: You can choose to highlight that lovely small waist by trying styles such as an A-line gown or an empire wedding dress. Necklines such as a bardot or an open V neck gown gown can also be a winner for the pear-shaped bride to draw attention towards the neck and shoulders.

Athletic

Straight up and down.

Dress dos: Whilst many styles will suit your frame, try on an empire wedding dress as this shape is made for you. Empire wedding dresses feature a high waist that hugs your upper torso with a straight, soft and flowing skirt for a simple, stylish and classic bridal look.
