How Does Wedding Dress Sizing Work? 5 Things You Need to Know

If you’re recently engaged or your bridal appointment is coming up, you may be wondering how wedding dress sizing works. If there’s one conversation I have with every one of my brides it’s about the stress of sizing. It’s confusing to understand why wedding dresses don’t match our high street dress size, and then we’re left wondering what size will fit… or why are the dress we love is so small. Read on for Bridal Gossip’s latest Bride Guide: The 5 Things You Need to Know About Wedding Dress Sizing.

  1. Measurements don’t equal size

Your measurements and your size are two different things and one size doesn’t fit all. To get the perfect fitting gown your measurements must be taken and for many brides, these don’t necessarily match a number. Dresses at Bridal Gossip are always ordered to your largest measurement and then altered with your seamstress to suit the split sizes and uniqueness of your body shape. Your dream dress might need to be altered in different areas to ensure that you get the right fit for you.

  2. What size wedding dress am i?

Unfortunately, there is no universal size chart when it comes to wedding dresses. Since size charts are dependent on the designer, you may not know your dress size until you choose your wedding dress. However, if you have access to your designer’s bridal size chart online, you can measure yourself at home to have a better idea of your size in that certain brand. Typically, you can expect to go up at least one/two sizes from your everyday clothing size. However, it may be more depending on the style of the dress and your unique figure

  3. Sizing really is just a number

A bridal gown or wedding dress really isn’t like buying a pair of jeans. While you might be a certain size at your favourite clothing store, wedding dresses in Cornwall are sized to alter, not necessarily sized like jeans. At Bridal Gossip we have dress sizes between sizes 8 – 32, so no matter your shape and size, we have samples in all sizes for every bride to be to try. It’s about getting the right size to suit your shape, never the other way around.

  4. How are wedding dresses measured?

When we measure your dress we aim to get the best fit for you and your body shape. We measure three areas of your body.

Bust: Wearing the undergarments that you will wear with the dress, wrap the measuring tape around your back and under your arms at the fullest part of your bust.

Waist: Stand up straight and bend to the side, the crease created is your natural waist. Wrap tape around the narrowest part of your natural waist.

Hips: Stand with your feet together, wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat.

  5. Styles and sizes for everyone

At Bridal Gossip, we pride ourselves on our bespoke collections, personable service and affordable price tags. Our styling of dresses ranges from boho, relaxed, traditional lace in all sizes from 8-32. With years of experience, we would love to help anyone who is concerned about not being able to find the perfect gown for their special day – remember size is just a number used for ordering.
